In the brain salsa post Personal Development; How To Get Motivated Part IV meditation expert Cherie Miranda asked, “Is there a way for people to become more self aware, do you think?” And Mark Hogan (son of body language expert Kevin Hogan) asked “…even if you are aware you are falling behind, how can you keep a level of self discipline instilled in yourself so that you catch back up, or don’t fall behind in the first place?”

They remind of a question posed by the late Jim Rohn, “Who motivates the motivator?” One of the greatest questions I have ever heard and a question that I have grappled with and pondered for hundreds of hours. Why are some people self starters, disciplined, motivated and others not.

There was a study done by Stanford University that set out to pin point what makes a super achiever. They analyzed super achievers that had dramatically out paced others in their field to become the upper echelon of the upper echelon. They examined many aspects from culture, regions, nationality, race, childhood, education, etc.

The goal of the study was to find the key to becoming motivated, self disciplined and a super achiever. Though there were some things that were consistent in a segment or group of participants they really couldn’t come up with a universal list that could be applicable across the board with the exception of one.

Now before I reveal the one linking factor I want you to think about what that might be. Could it be a life changing event, education, the region you where born in, your parents’ financial status, teachers you had in college or grade school, something in your home life, etc. Now as you are contemplating what it is I want you to ask yourself, “What if I don’t have that?“ How will it affect your self concept?

I will tell you that if you don’t currently have this key catalyst to become a super achiever that it is too late to get it. Your opportunity to have it is gone and you had no way of influencing whether you got it or not – it is, by a great extent, a “luck of the draw” circumstance.

The most consistent factor in super achievers was an encouraging mother. And not just an encouraging mother but how she framed the encouragement and the age of the child when she did it. For example if a child says “Momma I am going to be a movie star when I grow up.” Which one of the three responses below do you think is the one that a super achiever heard?

1. “I think we all would like to be a movie star but you need to be realistic and now that it is highly unlikely you could be successful at that. You are too smart to be an actor you need to pick something else.”

2. “That’s great honey, I know that you could be a great movie star. I think you should go for it but also it is a good idea to have a second option incase the first one doesn’t work out.”

3. “I know that you will be a great movie star. You will work hard, focus on it and achieve it because you achieve everything you work hard and focus on.”

The answer is 3. In the early years of the child’s development a blindly encouraging mother was the most consistent factor (of the criteria monitored in the Stanford study) of people who are super achievers. It is also worth noting that for women a blindly encouraging father was also a very consistent trait.

Now if you didn’t have blindly encouraging parents – now what? The odds are that most of us had parents more on the line of 1 and 2. So does that mean you are doomed for mediocrity? How has your self concept been affected? What can you do as an adult to overcome less than blindly encouraging parents? We will examine these issues in the next post.

In the first post of Personal Development; How To Get Motivated, Internet dating expert April Braswell asked the following questions,

“Do you think that Self Awareness, at least some level of it, is the beginning behind Personal Improvement? And do you find there are certain temperaments or people who are most inclined towards that kind of improvement? What about those who are oblivious?”

How important is “self awareness” in personal development and getting motivated? First let me start off by saying that I believe “self awareness” is somewhat subjective in definition. From a philosophical definition it is along the lines of “I think, therefore I am.” In a psychological perspective it is ones awareness of their own level of knowledge, skills, attitudes, opinions – basically knowing what makes you tick and your abilities.

As it relates to Personal Development; How To Get Motivated I am addressing from the psychological perspective. Self awareness is a critical component in success. Self evaluation of your flaws is the process that starts improvement.

Continual improvement is essential for long term success and viability. If you look at the companies that made up the Dow Jones Industrial average in 1911 only one is still on the list, General Electric. Even if you go back 50 years to 1951 only 7 of the current 30 where on the list.

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was, at one time, the largest publicly traded company in the world. The PRR still holds the record for the longest continuous paying dividend (it paid out dividends to its shareholders for more than 100 years in a row). At its peak the PRR had a larger budget than the U.S. government (try pulling that off today).

The PRR was a corporate behemoth like no other the world had seen and it seemed invulnerable. However, in the seventies PRR merged with New York Central in an attempt to save the two companies and eventually they filed for bankruptcy protection in the mid seventies and the viable pieces were stripped off and sold. And now the PRR is little more than a space on a Monopoly board. Of course this was all before the U.S. government came up with the notion of “too big to fail”.

Much like the Packard Automobile Company (referred to in Personal Development; How To Get Motivated Part III) we see example after example of incredibly successful corporations that have no self awareness of their vulnerability and subsequently lose their motivation to continually improve.

And specifically to April’s question as how key is self awareness to the start of personal development and motivation; it is a critical factor. The opposite of self awareness would be self obliviousness. If you are oblivious of your strengths and weaknesses you are not capable of objectively analyzing and methodically choosing areas to improve. Without improvement you can not grow and if you are not growing you are decaying.

There is no neutral in life or business. You are either moving forward or you are regressing as others advance past you. The desire to improve is the spark of motivation. Whether it is to improve your own circumstances or the circumstances of others there is no motivation without the desire to improve.

As to April’s last question, “What about those who are oblivious?” I do not hold out much hope for those who are oblivious except that they may be the benefactors of other’s generosity. With the advent of the Internet and a global commerce the market place is becoming a more and more competitive place. But not only is it competitive among business but it is becoming more competitive for employees to maintain employment.

As we know from history, becoming self-aware, and evolving is a critical factor in success and survival – even when you are on top.

In the first post for Personal Development; How To Get Motivated some really good question came up. Hypnotherapist Eva Palmer asked, “What would you do if you have planned, let’s say, 8 months to make your business and you are still half way after that time? Would you do some changes?”

I am unaware of anyone who has aggressively pursued personal development not hitting some snags along the way. This can cause frustration and kill motivation. How to get motivated when you aren’t making progress?

One thing is to touch base with why you are doing this. In my post Classroom For Success Why You Care I talk about creating a document that captures the importance of the task. As you take the life long journey to personal development; how to get motivated is largely driven by how passionate you are about something.

In my post Goal GPS Staying Focused And Negotiating Life Detours I show examples how to take your “Why I Care” document and drill down to the most important reasons/issues to you. These are the buy-in; these are the why you are doing it and if they are really important to you these are what will keep you moving forward when you want to quit.As far as making changes – absolutely.

Continual evaluation and adjustments should occur when things are going bad and good. The Packard automobile was one of the most popular luxury vehicles in the thirties and forties. They built a huge elaborate manufacturing plant in Detroit Michigan which actually had elevators that took the automobiles from floor to floor as they progressed through the assembly line. They were the epitome of success.

A Picture Of The Packard Automobile Company In Its Prime

They had no concept that anyone would want something different in a luxury car than what they were offering. Now they’re manufacturing plant is a crumbling grim reminder that you have to evolve to survive.

Pakard Automobile Company As It Looks Today

As to Eva’s specific question of only being 50% in 100% of the time I would say some changes need to be made. There are probably issues with time estimates, time allocation and efficient use of time when working on the project. We will look at these issues in a future post on time management.

In personal development, how to get motivated is a critical success factor. You must be able to motivate yourself to do that which will get you closer to your goal. Being a self starter is a great trait to have – but what about those who aren’t. When it comes to personal development; how to get motivated – I am reminded of a quote by Jim Rohn, “Who motivates the motivator?”

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – ACTION

In the part I of Personal Development; How To Get Motivated we discussed ways to make suggestions to the mind and prime yourself for self motivation. However there is another critical success factor that must be looked at: action. Action is the catalyst that propels you to results. Intense wishing, visualization, etc will not manifest what you want; you have to have action.

This is the part of personal development that seems to keep most people in neutral. They can conjure up some concept of their dreams but they do not get motivated to take action. And when you think about it, it is just a mental game. For most people there is not a physical impairment which keeps them form getting motivated and taking action. It is the thought of the action and a negative emotion attached to that thought that blocks the action.

Getting back to the question, in personal development; how to get motivated – you must deal with both the mental and the physical. You want to start creating an association of positive, pleasurable emotions with action.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – ASSOCIATION OF PLEASURE WITH ACTION

Association of emotions with the physical is a huge influencing factor. Marketing companies learned many years ago that if you can associate your product with a pleasurable experience that people will have a better feeling about your product and be more inclined to buy it. Beer companies may exploit this better than anyone else. When you think of the Super Bowl what products come to mind? For most people Bud Light will be one of the first products they think of.

Anheuser Busch discovered decades ago that associating their products with sporting events positively impacted their sales. Because most people associate sporting events with pleasure/leisure and through decades of branding you subconsciously (and to a great extent now even consciously) associate products like Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob, etc with baseball, boxing, football, basketball, hockey and so on.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – MARKETING AND BRANDING TO YOURSELF

So now you must market to yourself and brand action with positive experiences. Now this may take some work because we have been programmed to associate work with negative emotions. Going back to doing homework at school, cleaning your room when you wanted to be outside, given an undesirable task at work, etc. Now I can’t say that you will ever get to the point where you work becomes as enjoyable as watching a great sports game or watching a good movie and that is not necessarily the goal here. What we want to do is get to point where the negative associations don’t stop you or cause you to procrastinate.

As far as I know there has not been a lot done on developing techniques to create this work pleasure association. So this is going to be a self exploration as to what works for you. However we can take a clue from the marketing world and know that imagery can cause an association.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – TECHNIQUE ONE

Here is a technique you can try; take some pictures of you working. Some at a desk, some doing home chores, some at your job, whatever tasks you seem to have a hard time getting motivated to do. Now put them up in areas where you do leisure activities, like bay a stereo, TV, computer, video game, a patio you relax on. Then when you are feeling positive emotions of enjoyment, satisfaction, relaxation look at a picture of you working and hold on to that positive emotion. Don’t shift your attitude and say, “I hate my job” or “I hate cleaning gutters” or “I hate working on proposals”, etc. Just keep your focus on the positive and look at the image without really thinking about it.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – TECHNIQUE TWO

When you are having a hard time getting motivated think about it being completed. Get an image in your mind of what it will look like when it is done and then conjure up an emotion of satisfaction and accomplishment. Then jump in and just start keeping a focus on the feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment (or whatever positive emotion works for you).

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – TECHNIQUE THREE

Plan your actions. Before you start briefly write out the actions you will have to take to accomplish the task. Put the tasks in the order in which they will have to be accomplished and if at all possible make the first several tasks easy ones. Then tell yourself over and over again “do it now, do it now, do it now” and start in on the first task without thinking. Go to the second and so on until you are engaged and committed to seeing it through. Upon completion think back at how easy it was to start those first tasks. Think about how you said “do it now” and then just jumped in and started. Reflect on how good it feels to be done with the task.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – TECHNIQUE FOUR

For long range goals/tasks that will take days to years to accomplish try treasure mapping. There is most likely an ultimate benefit for you doing this long term item: like to keep your job so you can have money or it might be part of a long range plan for financial freedom or losing weight. What you want to do is collect images that represent that ultimate benefit and make a collage. Then we you go to work on your task look at the collage of treasures you will receive by successfully completing this long range goal. Feel the positive emotions you will feel when you have these treasures.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT; HOW TO GET MOTIVATED – CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN TECHNIQUE

If these techniques don’t work for you be creative and come up with your own. Keep experimenting and working it until you find the right technique for you that will erase that imaginary line between work and plan. But the most important thing is to take action.

Personal development is a critical factor for success no matter what you do. The question is how to get motivated to focus on personal development. How to Motivate? That should be one of the key question you ask when planning your personal development. How to motivate yourself? How to motivate your family? How to motivate your support team and so on. How to get motivated is a tough one to take on but it can be the lynch pin to a successful personal development program.

In relation to the question how to motivate Meditation Expert Cherie Miranda asked “We’re predisposed to be lazy, so what’s the best way to overcome that predisposition and develop a strong work ethic?” Additionally Michael D Walker from the Success Secrets asked “ So, what are your best recommendations for getting past this default mode of being lazy?”

These questions were in response to my post The Lazy Song with put forth the theory that we are inherently predisposed to conserve energy which can make us inclined to be lazy. Based on this assumption it makes it even more challenging to over come laziness and motivate yourself. In fact when you start to develop your program to get motivated you may find you experience an uneasy feeling as you are getting out of your natural comfort zone.

So the first thing is to acknowledge that as you develop your work ethic it may feel uncomfortable and unnatural. Your subconscious mind may be sending you messages to stop and conserve your energy.

For some a viable technique to deal with this may just be to verbally acknowledge the uneasy sensation then reinforce that it is important to complete the task you are working on. Additionally say to yourself that having a good work ethic is essential for your continued personal development and that it will build self-esteem as well as allow you to achieve your goals and live a happier life.

Now this is just an example of what you can say, script something that feels right for you and that you buy into. Or just an impromptu message that conveys the objective is also acceptable. The objective here is to acknowledge what’s going on then communicate to your subconscious that this is important to you, it will benefit you and it is what you want – including specific benefits is always helpful. Say this out load and in a calm confident voice.

Another technique is to develop a regular self talk program. Very similar to above but it is a much longer script that goes into more detail and reinforces several key issues to help develop your work ethic. With self talk you would read the script several times a day and especially before you go to bed. Also recording it playing it back why you are driving, cooking, getting ready in the morning, etc. will help accelerate the programming of your mind and habit. There is much more to the self-talk technique and we will discuss it more in future posts.

The next technique that you may try is hypnosis. For this your best bet is to go to a certified hypnosis instructor.

Now if you are a very strong willed person you may not need any mental programming and you just bull through it. But odds are, if you were this type you would probably already have a strong work ethic.

The next step is developing a specific action plan to incorporate work ethic habits. We will discuss this more in the next post.

Are you getting excited? Because we are getting closer to starting up a new small business. We have defined our passion, created to a GPS document to keep us on track as we hit road blocks after starting up a new small business. Now for the GPS to work we have to input the address for our end destination. In this Classroom For Success we are going to develop the end destination of your new small business.

As odd as it may seem, before starting a new small business, defining what it looks like in the future can greatly increase your chances of success. As Thomas Watson Jr. was building IBM he would visual every aspect of what he ultimately wanted the business to look like. He went to extreme visual detail including visuallizing the building, the type of cars in parking lot, the people walking from their cars, through the lobby and to their offices. He saw faces, office décor, clothing attire, makes of cars, etc.

Many of Einstein’s greatest works started as vivid day dreams. Having a clear, vivid image of what you consider success will help you be more successful in your new small business.

There is no limit to extent you can take this. Additionally it can be a living dynamic document that you can be changed as appropriate. After starting up a new small business is when you will start getting a real education as to the whole game of business and your ultimate vision will change.

Things you want to consider are; how much money you want to earn, how many people will you employ (if any), will you out source some of the work (recommended for the parts that you hate doing or don’t generate revenue), what will you self-perform, will you have an inventory of merchandise, will you have an office or work out of the house, what is the experience you want to create for your client, will you be bargain barn dirt cheap, exclusive and chic, high value and reasonably priced, will you have an elaborate dog and pony show, will you have a website and what will it look like, what services/products are you going to offer, where are you going to network, what kind of vehicle are going to drive, how will you dress, what will your clients look like, who is your target market and where will you find them and so on.

For our interior decorating example our end destination might look like this:

I have an interior decorating service that is going to be focusing on lower high income homes and small businesses. The home owner’s household income is between $150,000.00 and $300,000.00. I have an office in an upscale office building and my only employee is my personal assistant. My personal assistant is a woman somewhere between 30 – 50 years of age who is excellent at talking to people on the phone. She is efficient and organized and her main duties are scheduling my appointments, building rapport with customers and managing the day to day activities of the office. I have an open office with a trendy , slightly edgy décor. I have a glass table with chrome chairs for client consultation. I have a wine rack with mid-range wines to offer clients during consultations. I have a website that is an informational resource on interior decorating demonstrating my expertise. I have short instructional videos people can watch on my site as well as I sell information products that have developed for the do it yourselfers who don’t hire me directly….

Now note that this is worded in the present tense as if you have it today. This is done to kick in the subconscious mind and get it working for you 24/7. Now also know that when you are starting a new small business you may not be able to do all this immediately – that is okay. You are creating the end destination address for your life GPS. The more detailed the more vivid the better.

I recommend that you write this up and read it every day for a month. Read it first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed. Addtionally also recorded it and listen to it often. Get clear, get focused and engrain it in your mind.

Take your time with this. This is your end game and you want to clear and focused.

Now do your homework and class is dismissed until the next post.

In this Classroom For Success we are going to look at how to create your own personal GPS. A critical factor for success in accomplishing goals and achieving your dreams is to get back on track after you have a setback. Obstacles will most assueredly come enrouthe to achieving your dreams and one of the keys to success is to find detours around them. We will use some of the exercises we did in the previous Classrooms For Success to create a guiding document to act as your GPS as you achieve goals along your way to the end destination :a successful life.

In the last five years Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have replaced the Rand McNally map when you go on a trip. How convenient it is to just type in an address and have a computer generated voice give you step by step instructions.

Garmin has yet to develop the GPS for our life. Where as that hairpin turn you encountered in a mountain pass will be in the same place tomorrow so you can be prepared to negotiate it; life is much more dynamic. Life constantly throws new turns, washes out bridges and turns highways into dead ends.

Besides the need to develop the skills (developing these skills will be covered in future posts) to deal with all these life hurdles and find new routes you must also keep your end destination in focus. A majority of the time people will abandon their dreams and lose focus because they become discouraged when life throws a brick wall in the middle of their route to success.

When you are in a unfamiliar city and your GPS takes you down a road the was recently closed for a water main break all you have to do is hit the “detour” icon, listen to electronic voice say “recalculating” and wait for it to give you a new direction. The GPS doesn’t give up, doesn’t get discouraged, doesn’t get frustrated it just deals with the situation and goes to the next logical route.

However we have emotions and we are vulnerable to set backs. We have a plan and we get completely surprised when it doesn’t work out exactly how we envisioned it would.

Salsa Wisdom: As you pursue your passion you will get slammed to ground repeatedly. Some times it will be a full body slam leaving you dazed and confused and sometimes it will be a stumble that you will quickly recover from. The bottom line is expect set backs, disappointment and failure along the way.

How many times have you had a friend or family member who was all excited about a new venture (be it a new business, a new job, a new hobby, etc.) and they were ready to take on the world. Then a few months later you ask them how it was going and they have abandoned the idea. They always have several excuses why it didn’t work or they quit. 90% of the time the reason they quit was that they hit an obstacle and they shifted their focus on the obstacles and lost site of the end destination.

Imagine if when you hit that road closed by the water main break if you GPS just kept continually taking you in a circle back to that same road. When you hit the detour icon the GPS keeps it focus on the end destination and starts looking for other viable options to get there. This must be you when life puts a deep chasm between you and your goal.

In the Classroom For Success today we are going to make a guiding document to keep you focused on the end the destination. Review your exercises on “Why Do I Care”. As you go though it take three different colored highlighters (say yellow, green and pink) and highlight the items that are most important to you in yellow. The ones that somewhat important to you in green and the ones of the least importance to you in pink. Do this with both the document that is focused on “me” and the one that is focused on “who else will benefit”.

Now you are going to create a narrative that is entitled Why My Passion For (what you chosen or in our example) Interior Decorating Is Worth Staying Focused On. Then write a narrative that you will be willing to read over and over again. You need to have some kind of prose but it can also be a bulleted list at certain points.

For example you could have:

I know that as I pursue my passion to run a successful interior decorating business that I will encounter times that will be discouraging, frustrating and I may even entertain the notion of quiting. However during those time when I encounter set backs I will focus on the end game and I will reinforce why this is important to me. I will restlessly pursue my passion because I know if I stay the course I will:

I will prove to myself I can

            I will have financial freedom

I love dealing with people and helping them

            Etc.

Now you if you prefer you can make it all narrative, it is whatever you will be most likely to take the time to read. After you have the “me” GPS do the same thing for “who else will benefit”.

I suggest that you read this document daily. In fact I would recommend that you record it on a CD or on your IPod and listen to it as you drive to and from work. Also schedule one day a month to revise the document as your perspective changes as to what is important to you and the benefits to others. As you update your document also update your recordings.

In a future post will discuss specific techniques in making recordings that will help program your subconscious mind for success but we have a lot of ground to cover before we get there.

Now go do you homework and class is dismissed until the next post of Classroom For Success.

The other thing that is interesting is that April singled out “lazy mentality”. I do believe that we are instinctually wired to be lazy. Your body has so much energy and when it is expended it is gone until you can replenish it. Neanderthals survival was linked to conserving energy so they would have reserves for fight or flight when confronting danger.

Additionally many martial arts teach to keep your muscles and body in a relaxed manner conserving your energy. Then at the last possible moment you tap into your muscles and energy as you to take action.

When birds fly they will usually swoop down and glide as far as they can before flapping their wings. This is to conserve energy.

So it would seem that we are predisposed to being lazy to conserve energy. However, our fight or flight need has evolved over the last 10,000 years or so. We no longer have to be so concerned about the threat from a predator. Today our survival is dependent on creating value within an economic system.

For most of us going out and gathering berries, nuts, fruit and so on for our existence is no longer an option. Instead we have to gather income in exchange for value we bring to the market place.

So you have those like April who have evolved their sense of fight or flight and they conserve energy by not wasting time on unnecessary actions, being clear in their focus and working efficiently. Then you have the other 90 percent who are content on being “dependent on the kindness of strangers” (borrowing a line from Tennessee Williams). And for most of them strangers can be defined as the government taking from the industrious people and giving to them.

Henderson Nevada heating and cooling expert Kevin Bettencourt lamented in his blog the other day about the declining work ethic in the USA. In my opinion the USA adapted a very egotistical and dangerous attitude the last four decades and this is the attitude that we are entitled to be the economic super power of the world. The reality is that you earn that spot and you have to work hard to maintain it or someone else will come to knock you off.

Strong backs have very little value in the USA market place these days. It is the strong mind that is the most in demand. And those who will sharpen that mental saw and expend the energy required to survive and excel will do well.

So in summary I do believe that we are naturally wired to be lazy. That work ethic is a learned habit and those who develop the habit will survive in the new age of fight or flight.

In our last session in the classroom for success we examined “who cares” from the perspective of a potential client. In today’s classroom for success we will examine “why do I care”.

As previously discussed in past posts, passion is a critical success factor and it can be the motivator to keep you moving toward a successful life as your world seems to be crumbling around you. Understanding and having a clear vision as “Why do I care” is the reinforcing of those walls keeping them up in as the constant demands of life attack your success life journey.

Now as you answer “why do I care” we are going to look at it from two perspectives 1) why is it important to ME and 2) who will else will benefit. Staying with the theme of interior decorating let’s address the question of why do I care.

Why do I care (from the “me” perspective)… Because I have always dreamed of having my own business. Because I love dealing with people and helping them. Because every time I go into somebody’s home the first thing I do is start looking at how I would have decorated it differently. Because I am constantly looking at the decor of a room and thinking what could be done to give it that “WOW” factor. Because when I read magazines I spend more time looking at picture of rooms analyzing the use of colors, shapes, symmetry, lighting etc. looking for ideas that I can incorporate. Because I redo every room in my home every six months to a year. Because I want an additional source of income. Because I want more financial freedom. Because I know that I can have more impact than 90% of the interior decorators out there. Because every time I have used an interior decorator it has been a frustrating experience; when it could be (and should be)exciting and enjoyable. Because I want to be challenged… and so on.

Why do I care (from the “who else will benefit” perspective)… Extra income will allow me to put more money into a retirement account so my spouse and I can have comfortable retirement lifestyle. Extra income in my retirement account will give me security so I don’t have to depend on Social Security (which will probably not be there or will be a pittance). Extra income will allow me to put more money into my children’s college fund to make sure they can get a top quality education and a better chance for a good life. I will be setting an example for my children that you are accountable for yourself so that they will be better prepared to do what it takes to achieve a good quality of life. As I build clientele I gain more financial freedom so I don’t have to be worried about how I will pay the bills if I lose my job which will reduce stress. Less stress will create a better home life for my family and I too enjoy. Additional income will give me the security and freedom to quit my existing job if ever I have the desire to. I will be setting an example for friends and family that you do have the ability to improve your financial position if you want to take the initiative and put in effort. My clients will get a premium service that at a reasonable rate. My clients will get someone who will be dedicated to their satisfaction. Businesses who use me will be able to be more profitable by having interior design that increases productivity. Companies who use me will be able to recruit the best of the best of the young generations by having an interior design that will appeal to Gen Y. Companies that use me will have less turn over and be able to keep their best employees by have an office environment that will create and reinforce a culture they want to stay in… and so on.

Sorry to bore you will the long list of examples but I wanted to illustrate the range of things to consider. You can take it to any level you want as long as it meaningful to you. Let me emphasis that these have to be GENUINE and MEANINGFUL to YOU. This is not about just making a long list. This is about digging into your inner self and discovering what is TRULY meaningful and important to you. Do these exercises earnestly and with complete honesty because based on what you come up with we are going to create a document that you will use to stay motivated, on track and re-engage you when life takes you in the wrong direction.

Go do your homework and class is dismissed until the next post.

Now that you have your passion defined you have to decide what you are going to do with it and indentify critical success factors. Most people on this blog are looking for ways to increase income and that is what I am going to focus on. If you are more altruistic in your desires then there is still benefit in going through these steps and the critical success factor may be same as the capitalist – it is just ultimately you will be using a different measuring stick to define and determine success.

So let’s say that Interior Decorating is the passion on which you have decided to move forward. (Disclaimer – I know absolutely nothing about interior decorating so I may say things that are not 100% correct). You now need to start answering questions about you passion to give you the material to create the “Big Picture” – more on the “Big Picture” in future posts.

The first question that comes to mind is “who cares?” Why should anyone care that you are doing interior decoration and secondly why should they care about interior decorating at all? What is the benefit to them?

So if were answering these questions this would be some of the possible answers.

Since I a newbie interior decorating and have not been programmed by the same old, over done concepts; my approach will be unique and original. My freshness makes me more open to listen to you and what you want and not force some “done to death” décor on you that I think is good but you hate.

Since I am new I am aggressively studying and learning interior design so I will be bringing the most current information on trends and style with me. As I am starting out so you will get unbelievably personalized attention as I do not have a lot of back log squeaking wheels that will get oiled first.

Home entertaining is becoming a preferred option for more and more families. They are finding more value in entertaining friends and families than spending their money on movies, restaurants, amusement parks, etc. Interior design can allow you to take that experience to higher levels through more function space, proper and adjustable lighting to set moods appropriate to the theme of the party, fabrics, floorings, paints, etc. that will be more durable and easier to clean.

Additionally your home is a statement of who you are, the level of you success, the status that you have earned and the proper interior décor will reflect that to your family and friends. Furthermore interior design can not only increase the value of you house but your house will sell faster while other houses stay on the market for extended periods of time.

The next question you need to answer is “why do you care?” Why is this important to you and how will you and others benefit. We will examine this more in the next post.
